The Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74, also known as the Pathétique Symphony, is Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's final completed symphony, written between February and the end of August 1893. The composer entitled the work The Passionate Symphony, employing a Russian word, Патетическая Pateticheskaya, meaning passionate or emotional, which was then mis-translated into French as pathétique, meaning solemn or emotive. In terms of performance, Neeme Järvi and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra find the right mixture of late Romantic ardor and Classical control that this composer strove to balance in his work: the symphony as played here never descends into bathos, but its darkness and pessimism are alleviated by the grace of the quirky Allegro con grazia and the jauntiness of the Allegro molto. In Francesca da Rimini Järvi's restraint is a positive advantage, for it's very easy to make this symphonic poem seem overwrought and noisily brash, and he reveals it as more profound and well-ordered than that. The impact of the performances is helped by a fine recording, which even in old-fashioned stereo is startlingly vivid.
