Album

The title of Hubert Parry's 1915 choral song cycle, Songs of Farewell, aptly sums up the theme and tone of this a cappella album featuring the British choral ensemble Tenebrae, led by its founder, Nigel Short. All of the works have an autumnal, valedictory mood, and would be appropriate for memorial or funeral services. The music is not morbid, though most of it emphasizes the serenity of death and has an optimistic radiance. The selections range from a part song by Arthur Sullivan to Richard Rodney Bennett's 1999 A Good-Night, a memorial tribute to Linda McCartney. The music spans. At the round earths imagined corners. Songs of Farewell is a set of six choral motets by the British composer Hubert Parry. The pieces were composed between 1916 and 1918 and were among his last compositions before his death. The songs were written during the First World War when a number of Parry's pupils at the Royal College of Music were being killed in action. Parry's choice of texts are thought to reflect a yearning to escape the violence of a world at war, and to find peace in a heavenly realm. In contrast to Parry's assured 1916. Having previously been hailed for their recordings of French and Renaissance choral works, Nigel Short's Tenebrae now turn their attention to their native British commemorative partsongs and choral works, the centrepiece Parry: English composer, teacher and historian of music. He was also an enthusiastic cruising sailor and owned successively the yawl The Latois and the ketch The Wanderer. In 1908 he was elected as a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron, the only composer so honoured. What Part of Dread Eternity, Jerusalem, Hear My Words, Ye People и другие песни. Composed towards the end of Parrys life, the Songs of Farewell have taken on something of an epithetical interpretation: they are almost a musical summation of his compositional life, reflecting Parrys love of English renaissance madrigals and partsongs as much as the influence on his work from German composers like Brahms - made more complicated as these works were composed as the. This has to be the best recording of the Parry Songs of Farewell in existence. You won't be sorry if you buy this. Read more
