Album
Terry Gibbs Plays Jewish Melodies in Jazztime is a 1963 studio album by Terry Gibbs. It is the debut recording of Alice McLeod, who became Alice Coltrane when she married John Coltrane in 1965. Bei Mir Bist du Schön Sammy Cahn, Saul Chaplin, Jacob Jacobs, Sholom Secunda 5:01. Papirossen Cigarettes Herman Yablokoff 4:24. Kazochok Russian Dance Traditional 2:50. Vuloch A Folk Dance Traditional 3:59. My Yiddish Momme Lew Pollack, Jack Yellen 3:04. Terry Gibbs integrates two separate bands on this album, which not only interprets traditional Jewish melodies but also works of fairly recent vintage at the time these 1963 recordings were made that incorporate Jewish rhythms. The results have stood the test of time very well, with swinging versions of And the Angels Sing and Bei Mir Bist Du Schon, along with centuries-old melodies like Kazochock Russian Dance, which has an introduction that makes one visualize a circus, and Vuloch A Folk Dance, reworked by Gibbs into a snappy waltz. Terry Gibbs's best-known dream band was the big band documented on an acclaimed series of unearthed recordings from the late 1950s and early '60s. His least-known dream band is the one featured on this long out-of-print album, which combines a bop-minded jazz quartet headed by Gibbs on vibraphone and marimba and a quartet devoted to traditional Jewish music led by his older brother, drummer Sol Gage. Born Julius Gubenko, Gibbs started out in his violinist father Abe Gubenko's Radio Novelty Orchestra, which Gage later inherited
