Coma Witch is the seventh studio album by American deathcore band the Acacia Strain. It was released on October 14, 2014 through Rise Records. It is the band's first album to feature new guitarists Devin Shidaker and Richard Gomez, and the first album to not feature original guitarist Daniel DL Laskiewicz due to his departure from the band in May 2013. The Acacia Strains career has been a perplexing one to say the least. As one of the early bands to join the deathcore wave of the early 2000s, they were also one of the first to feel the wave of hate emanating from metal fans. The Acacia Strain were always on the simple side of deathcore, and as time and albums went by they seemed drop the few actual death metal influences they had. They dont use blast beats, technical riffing, or tremolo picking. Their only real link to deathcore is the prominent use of breakdowns and an extremely bottom heavy sound, not to mention vocalist Vincent Bennet. The band have since undergone numerous changes in their lineup. To date, they have released seven studio albums, two split albums, two EPs, and have appeared on the Soundtrack for Homefront. The Acacia Strain have said they dislike genre labels, and instead describe themselves as Heavy. You might hear other music that sounds like it, but those bands can't touch what we have. Though it's the first album to arrive after the departure of founding member guitarist Daniel DL Laskiewicz who left the band in 2013, the 11 tracks here sound very much in line with the death-and-misery-centered metal assault of the band's previous albums. Laskiewicz is replaced by new lead guitarist Devin Shidaker and rhythm player Richard Gomez, while founding member and lead vocalist Vincent Bennett remains the only original member still standing. Coma Witch is a bracing, unapologetic, mesmerizing album. And it could very well be easily one of the best metal albums of the year. The Acacia Strain is described in its press materials as being a deathcore band, but, if you read up on the group, it turns out that lead vocalist Vincent Bennett, who is the only remaining original member of the outfit, has gone on record as saying, Deathcore is the new nu-metal.
