The Irish musical tradition is an exceptionally rich one and within that tradition there also exists a strong strain of protest music. It's a rare Irish folk group which does not incorporate at least one or two of the rebel songs into an evening's performance, though some of the groups favor the earlier songs which have the advantage of being both better known and less controversial since they deal with past events. This collection of traditional Irish Republican songs turned out not to be what one might expect. Instead of the traditional Wolfe Tones or Tommy Makem type album, the group Battering Ram really takes these traditional songs and makes them their own. The music has a raw, wild edge to it, and is not dumbed down for non-Irish audiences. You can hear in their voices that Battering Ram is singing for the pure joy of song, not trying to turn a quick buck from a few sympathetic yanks. Saying this album is good is faint praise indeed.
