The Perpetual Glow 8. Michael Mueller What a deceptively wonderful album By starting in such an assuming, informal manner, one might think is just a vanity recording of an amateur choir. But the pieces quickly progress to reveal a terrific choir performing compelling arranged pieces. The real highlight, though, is the final piece a top-drawer ambient montage of all that preceded it. It's beautiful. But this is still an album, where each piece builds towards the last. Album 2017 8 Songs. Sunday Songs. The Beacon Sound Choir. Ambient the Beacon Sound Choir is an amateur affair that welcomes singers regardless of musical experience. Portland singer-songwriter Alela Diane is a member, and so is Brodericks sister Heather Woods Broderick, also a member of Horse Feathers and Efterklang, but its immediately apparent from the ensembles swollen tones that this is no professional choir. They continue those drone experiments in one song on this short but captivating album, and on the side-long Sea of Voices, a remix by the Dutch electronic musician Machinefabriek, their wordless singing is stretched and smeared into a 16-minute opus reminiscent of Stars of the Lid. Beacon Sound Choir is one of Brodericks most ambitious projects to date. Utilising the harmonies of a 35 strong choir, Sunday Songs plays out with an almost religious undercurrent the product of individuals inspired to commit a divine act of collaboration, recalling the rare splendour of a community in seamless alliance. Sunday Songs is released June 16 via First Terrace Records on LP and digital formats, including a limited run of green LPs. The Beacon Sound Choir turn in a spellbinding album of softly spun ethereal ambience with their Sunday Songs, seven tracks of slow forming harmonies that call to mind everyone from Arvo Pärt, William Basinski, Nils Frahm and the quieter reflections of Arthur Russell. Conceived by Peter Broderick and utilising the vocal harmonies of a 35 strong choir, The Beacon Sound Choir was assembled with the idea to bring together people to join in regardless of their vocal capabilities or musical experience. The end result transcends any religious undercurrents by pouring out some truly wonderful sounds w
