In the Beginning Circa 1960 was released by Polydor Records in 1970 catalogue number 24-4504. It was recorded in Hamburg in 1961. This album was originally released as The Beatles' First in Germany in 1964 and in the United Kingdom in 1967. Previous American releases of this material in LP form was split in 1964. Before beginning their recording career, the Beatles recorded a few tracks in Hamburg in 1961 as the backing group for British singer Tony Sheridan. Reissued in countless different packages around the globe after the Beatles became famous, this should in no way be considered their first album not only were their skills rudimentary, but Sheridan takes all but one of the lead vocals on this set of fairly tame covers of popular and early rock standards. The Beatles with Tony Sheridan and Their Guests was an American album featuring Cry for a Shadow, a track recorded by the Beatles in Hamburg in 1961, with five tracks recorded in Hamburg in 1961 in which the Beatles provided backing music for vocalist Tony Sheridan, some of which had been released in Germany on the album My Bonnie under the name Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers the name Beatles had been avoided as it sounded too like Piedels, Low German for penises.
