The Black Heart Rebellion are a Belgian experimental band from Ghent, formed in 2004 by vocalist Pieter Uyttenhove, guitarists Alex Maekelberg and Valentijn Goethals, bassist Emeriek Verhoye, and drummer Tim Bryon. Their initial style was rooted in hardcore punk, as manifest on their debut album Monologue 2008. After collaborating on a stage play, the band began a process of artistic reinvention which culminated in the release of Har Nevo in 2012. They experimented with atmosphere, introducing. TBHR has changed, shed its old skin, and slowly but surely reshaped its original mold. HAR NEVO is the bands second album and became a conjuring and restless creation. TBHR shows off many faces. Starting in the punk scene in 2004, the bands remarkable course roller-coasted from the international underground to more public stages in and around Belgium. The band was constantly on the hunt for new impulses, either visually, graphically or musically. Rather, the aesthetic of The Black Heart Rebellion closely resembles the suffocating darkness of Amenra's Mass V more than anything else, and while Har Nevo is a far cry from the devastating sonic heaviness of that album, it is just as crushing, albeit in a far different manner. Plodding, earth-shattering sludge riffs have been replaced with eerie post-rock leads dying-animal shrieks with breathy cleans, rough shouts, and the occasional screamo lines desolate, apocalyptic climaxes with lengthy sections of foreboding ambiance. Har Nevo is a strange, atmospheric tribalistic beast the guitars are fairly low in the mix whilst drums and other percussive elements compliment the music. The vocals feel tired and worn out, it works excellently when mixed with the equally tired music. Although usually when an album sounds really worn out then I usually get bored, however the languid delivery on Har Nevo works in its favour.
