The group's first album with Michael McDonald marked a shift to a more mellow and self-consciously soulful sound for the Doobies, not all that different from what happened to Steely Dan - whence McDonald and Jeff Baxter had come - between, say, Can't Buy a Thrill and Pretzel Logic. They showed an ability to expand on the lyricism of Patrick Simmons and Baxter's writing on Wheels of Fortune, while the title track introduced McDonald's white funk sound cold to their output, successfully. The Doobie Brothers were inducted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004. In 1969, singer, guitarist and songwriter Tom Johnston and drummer John Hartman formed the nucleus of what would become The Doobie Brothers. Recent Listening Trend. Co-founder Patrick Simmons discusses the Doobie Brothers' sixth studio album 'Taking It to the Streets,' released on March 19, 1976. It all came together on Takin' It to the Streets, released March 19, 1976. Another platinum success and their fourth consecutive Top 10 effort, it added a pair of Top 40 singles to their growing collection - the No. 13 title track and another McDonald composition, It Keeps You Runnin', which hit No. Yet to Simmons' lasting bemusement, McDonald's tenure with the band - which also produced the Grammy-winning smash Minute by Minute two years later - proved divisive among fans who missed the Doobies' old sound. The Doobie Brothers closed out the 2014 CMA Awards with a performance of this song. They were joined by a collection of Nashville stars including Brad Paisley, Sugarland and Hunter Hayes.
