The Doors is the debut album by the American rock band the Doors. Recorded in 1966 at Sunset Sound Recorders, Hollywood, California, it was produced by Paul A. Rothchild and released on January 4, 1967. The album features their breakthrough single Light My Fire and the lengthy song The End with its Oedipal spoken word section. The Doors was central to the progression of psychedelic rock, and has been critically acclaimed. In 2012 it was ranked No. 42 in Rolling Stone magazine's 500 greatest albums. Lead singer Jim Morrison initially wrote the lyrics about his break up with his girlfriend Mary Werbelow, but it evolved through months of performances at the Whisky a Go Go into a much longer song. The Doors recorded a nearly 12-minute version for their self-titled debut album, which was released on January 4, 1967. Producer Paul Rothchild called it one of the most beautiful moments I've ever had in a recording studio. Morrison would sometimes stop in the middle of this during concerts to get a reaction from the crowd. This song is about putting an End to all things comfortable, boring, routine, and safe and taking a chance on the wild, crazy, creative, instinctual and often times lonely self.
