Shake a Tail Feather is a song written by Otha Hayes, Verlie Rice, and Andre Williams and originally recorded in 1963 by the Chicago-based group The Five Du-Tones. The original recording reached 28 on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart and 51 on the Hot 100. Shake a Tail Feather has been covered by many other artists over the years: The Kingsmen included the song on their 1966 The Kingsmen Up And Away album. A 1967 version by James & Bobby Purify reached 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. Japan's P-Vine Records has done what no company in the States ever did: compile and release an album by the Five Du-Tones. It's a curious assembly, though. The group cut eight singles for Chicago's Onederful Records, but this collection omits four: their debut, Come Back Baby, Monkey See, Monkey Do, The Cool Bird, and Mountain of Love. The collection does include the original Shake a Tail Feather, which didn't chart as high as its remakes but was their biggest record.
