The Tragic Treasury: Songs from A Series of Unfortunate Events is the second and most recent studio album by indie pop band The Gothic Archies. The music, like the writing in the books themselves, is morose for comic effect. Some of the songs' lyrics have something to do with the story itself. The Tragic Treasury contains 13 songs corresponding to the 13 books in the series, with two additional bonus tracks also inspired by the series. All music is performed by the Gothic Archies, with Lemony Snicket accompanying on accordion. The Tragic Treasury is being released October 10, 2006, in conjunction with the final Lemony Snicket book, The End. I listened to the Audio book versions of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and these weird Gothic Songs kept coming up at the s6tart and end of the books. I grew very fond of these songs so had to get hold of them - and here they are on this CD. After the huge success of A Series of Unfortunate Events. All of the 13 songs that appeared on the audio books are present, as well as two bonus tracks. One of these, Walking My Gargoyle, is an extra from the ninth book in the series, Carnivorous Carnival, while the other, We are the Gothic Archies, serves as the band's theme song. On his fourth album of the year, Stephin Merritt compiles his contributions to the Unfortunate Events audiobooks: Fifteen songs of dejection, depression, and despair that add up to his most enjoyable record this century. The genre now receives what must be one of its definitive texts with The Tragic Treasury, comprising the 13 songs plus two bonus tracks Magnetic Fields leader Stephin Merritt composed for the audiobook versions of the Unfortunate Events tridecology. It's only appropriate that Merritt should wind up here: After all, 69 Love Songs inadvertently inaugurated the era of high-concept indie pop. The Tragic Treasury was released shortly before the 13th and final book of A Series of Unfortunate Events. It is a concept album with 13 tracks, each based in some way on a book from the series, as well as two bonus tracks, one of which was the original song intended for book 9. The Tragic Treasury may be Merritt's most consistent album since 2000's remarkable 69 Love Songs - it's packed with fantastic melodies and mordant lyrical wit. Read full review. Merritt doesn't deviate from his signature lo-fi synth pop and brooding vocals, but he certainly sounds like he's having a whole lot of fun. Like Merritt, Handler is a fan of not-so-secret pen names, and writes under the Lemony Snickett moniker. The album-which is only the second release under the Gothic Archies name in a decade, and the groups first full-length-is a step backward, reminiscent of Merritts early work with the Magnetic Fields. The Gothic Archies is the Gothic rock-bubblegum pop band of celebrated songwriter Stephin Merritt, also of The Magnetic Fields, The 6ths, and Future Bible Heroes. Merritt is the only member although he hopes to acquire more soon.
