Album
American Beauty is the fifth studio album by rock band the Grateful Dead. Released November 1, 1970, by Warner Bros. Records, the album continued the folk rock and country music style of their previous album Workingman's Dead, issued earlier in the year. Though the Americana approach is still evident in the songwriting, comparatively the sound focused more on folk harmonies and major-key melodies, showing influence from Bob Dylan and Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young. It was recorded between August and September 1970 and originally released in November 1970 by Warner Bros. The album continued the folk rock and country music explored on Workingman's Dead, and prominently features the lyrics of Robert Hunter. In 2003, the album was ranked 258th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. With 1970's Workingman's Dead, the Grateful Dead went through an overnight metamorphosis, turning abruptly from tripped-out free-form rock toward sublime acoustic folk and Americana. Taking notes on vocal harmonies from friends Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, the Dead used the softer statements of their fourth studio album as a subtle but moving reflection on the turmoil, heaviness, and hope America's youth was facing as the idealistic '60s ended. Formed in 1967 , The Grateful Dead championed the free-form improvisational sound that defined San Francisco rock & roll in the 60's. Jerry Garcia guitar, Phil Lesh bass, Bob Weir guitar, Ron Pigpen McKernan keyboards and Bill Kreutzmann drums made up the original band. In 1968 they added Mickey Hart to the line-up. The band's first four albums, Grateful Dead 1967, Anthem of the Sun 1968, Aoxomoxoa 1969 and Live Dead 1970 concentrated on capturing the band's legendary live. Released November 1, 1970. American Beauty is ranked at 261 on Rolling Stones list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, three spots above Workingmans Dead. American Beauty Q&A. American Beauty is a perfect display of the new genre the Dead fall into at this time, Country Rock. However, unlike the bands previous release, Workingmans Dead, the group does not completely abandon their Psychedelic and Acid Rock side. Sugar Magnolia: Since my first listen of the Grateful Deads greatest hits album Skeletons from the Closet, I have been in love with Sugar Magnolia. This simply, but nicely composed Bob Weir song speaks about pure love and good times. It is lead by a very catchy riff that I had set out to learn since my first listen and completely delivers, especially live. The Grateful Dead released 'American Beauty' on Nov. Listen to the Grateful Dead Perform 'Ripple'. As much harmony as they found while playing together, however, it proved hard to come by once the music stopped. The Grateful Dead struggled through a variety of personal issues during the making of American Beauty , including Mickey Hart's marked withdrawal following his father's malfeasance. Estranged from the band, he retreated to his home and started what turned into a four-year hiatus. Although he played on the album, his presence was greatly reduced
