History of the Grateful Dead, Volume One Bear's Choice is a live album by the Grateful Dead. Released in July 1973 on Warner Bros. Records, it offers concert highlights recorded February 13 and 14, 1970 at the Fillmore East in New York City. Often known simply as Bear's Choice, the title references band soundman Owsley Bear Stanley. It was originally intended to be the first volume of a series. The album peaked at number 60 on the Billboard 200. History of the Grateful Dead, Vol. 1 Bear's Choice - Grateful Dead. This 1973 release was the very last collection that the Grateful Dead authorized during their tenure with Warner Bros. in the late '60s and early '70s. However, this live disc was a sort of melancholy affair, as it centered on material featuring Ron Pigpen McKernan guitarvocalsmouth harp, who had left the band due to illness in June of the previous year. But Volume One of The History of the Grateful Dead consists of selections from a pair of late 1970 dates in which the band was still making the transition from acidic filmstrip music to Merle Haggard style countrified truckinisms. Workingmans Dead had just come out and the bands live performances included tunes from every corner of the American pop songbook. So Pigpens rasping and thoroughly boozed rendition of the hoary idiots lament, Katie Mae, aint much of a treat and reflects how oiled the cat was most of the time. Dark Hollow continues the sides acoustics with Lesh and Garcia on. What would become The Grateful Deads last album for Warner Bros Records, which bought the band to international immortality in 1967 and would produce nine great albums during this six year period, this well-received album gave Deadheads and admirers of The Dead yet another live euphoric live experience. Recorded live at The Fillmore East in 1970 and then released in 1973 to time-honoured success, History Of The Grateful Dead, Volume 1 Bears Choice showcases its dedication to Ron Pigpen McKernan, the bands keyboardist and harmonica player, who had died from a liver disease that same ye. Recorded over two nights in early 1970, History of The Grateful Dead, Vol. 1 Bear's Choice spotlights some choice in-concert staples from the most popular live attraction in rock & roll history. Produced by the legendary Owsley Stanley and recorded by longtime Dead associate Bear, the album's seven cuts include an 18-minute version of the perennial Smokestack Lightnin, along with such classic crowd pleasers as Dark Hollow, Wake Up Little Susie and a masterful rendition of the traditional I've.
