We're a Winner is a 1967 single recorded by The Impressions for the ABC-Paramount label. Written and produced by Impressions lead singer Curtis Mayfield, the song is notable as one of the most prominent popular recordings dealing with the subject of black pride. The phrase We're a Winner was later used as the motto of Mayfield's record label Curtom Records. Fabulous ImpressionsWe're a Winner. It's All Over is the Impressions' version of a song that had already been a hit for Walter Jackson, and the cover of Gene McDaniels' One Hundred Pounds of Clay the only selection not written by Mayfield is filler. The title track is an all time classic that rang around the world for those who were oppressed and in dire straits. My favorite songs on here are You always hurt me, IT's all over, you ought to be in heaven, I loved and I lostmy favorite song by them, ever,I can'T stay away from you, We're a winner, little brown boy, romancing to the folk song, no one to love And I'M Still waitin'. That's almost half of the CD. Album: Were A Winner ABC Paramount Records 1968. Curtis Mayfield & The Impressions - We're A Winner, Movin' On Up. Curtis Mayfield - Move On Up 1970. Its All Over. We're a Winner, included on a 1968 Impressions LP of the same name, became a virtual anthem for the Civil Rights Movement, and its success resulted not only in similar follow-ups from the Impressions among them Choice of Colors and This is My Country, but also marked the beginning of a trend towards increasing social consciousness in soul music. During and after We're a Winner's chart run in 1968, several other acts, including James Brown Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud and Sly & the Family Stone. It's not 'we are winners,' it's 'we're a winner. It's let's come together. It's an upbeat song about doing something, about being proud of who you are, about lifting yourself. For especially young African Americans, it became a very positive message. I later learned Mayfield only sang those lines on a 1971 concert recording from the album CurtisLive: There'll be no more Uncle Tom - at last, that blessed day has come And we're a winner, and everybody knows it too We just keep on pushing, Like Martin Luther told you to And I don't mind leaving here, to show the world we have no fear.
