Lorde acts her age on Melodrama, the great weird-pop album 2017 has been waiting for. She spent a lot of that debut album on the outside of young life looking in, adopting a slightly scolding persona she recently wryly referred to as library girl. For this four-years-later follow-up, its not as if she just chucked all that maturity, but shes at least wandering in and out of the party, and alternating between fretful and frisky, just like any good 20-year-old should. Melodrama is album of the year. Yes, yes it is easy to look at the other nominees in the category and look at who I am and say, Wow she thinks Lorde should win because she's a girl and that's probably all she listened to. Yes, I am a girl. Yes, I have listened to Lorde's album more than almost any other album in my life. BUT, I am plenty well-versed in the other albums up for the award. Lorde still should've won. Congrats Bruno, you did have some nice bops. On her sophomore album Melodrama, Lorde makes a few Top 40 concessions, but shows a ton of promise with the stylistic and formal risks she does take.
