Ghost in the Machine is the fourth studio album by English rock band The Police. The album was originally released on LP and cassettes on 2 October 1981 by A&M. The songs were recorded between January and September 1981 during sessions that took place at AIR Studios in Montserrat and Le Studio in Quebec, assisted by record producer Hugh Padgham. As the years go by the spotlight gets bigger and makes you sweat more. Andy Summers: A Visual Documentary, '81. Before we come together for an album, each of us goes into a studio of our own. I wrote ten songs for this album, and with a drum box, piano, bass and guitar put down the arrangements as I saw them, as best I could. Now that they've seen starvation and poverty first hand on their India tour, they seem impatient with boy-girl stuff. The album was originally released on 2 October 1981 by A&M. For their fourth album, 1981's Ghost in the Machine, the Police had streamlined their sound to focus more on their pop side and less on their trademark reggae-rock. Their jazz influence had become more prominent, as evidenced by the appearance of saxophones on several tracks. The production has more of a contemporary '80s sound to it courtesy of Hugh Padgham, who took over for Nigel Gray, and Sting proved once and for all to be a master of the pop songwriting format. The Ghost in the Machine Tour was a concert tour by The Police to promote their album Ghost in the Machine. To reflect the horns-based sound that permeated the album, the band decided to work for back-up musicians, hiring a horn section called The Chops Darryl Dixon, David Watson and Marvin Daniels, who previously worked on the Sugarhill label. The opening act for the North America II portion was Bow Wow Wow or Oingo Boingo or the Go-Go's and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts for the North America III. Ghost in the Machine is the fourth album by The Police, released in 1981. Much of the material in this album was inspired by Arthur Koestler's The Ghost in the Machine, which also donated the title.
