Sorrow Live In London 7, Single, Ltd. Sorrow is the fourth album by the English rock group Pretty Things. Released in 1968, it is one of the first rock concept albums. Based on a short story by singer Phil May, the album is structured as a song cycle, telling the story of the main character, Sebastian F. Sorrow, from birth through love, war, tragedy, madness, and the disillusionment of old age. The Pretty Things with special guests Arthur Brown and David Gilmour perform their 1968 psychedelic masterpiece 'S. Sorrow' at Abbey Road in Pretty Things were signed to the Fontana record label and their last album with that label, Emotions, left a sour taste in their mouths. The label forced a producer and orchestral arrangements on them that took the album into territories far from what they had in mind. This unfortunate turn of events forever labeled S. Sorrow as a me too album and killed any chance of success for it. In reality both albums may not qualify to be considered the first rock opera, as the band Nirvana released The Story of Simon Simopath in October of 1967, around the same time The Pretty Things started recording materials for S. The Pretty Things contract with Fontana had expired after the Emotions album had been released in April 1967. That record had been both a commercial flop and an artistic failure. After making their name playing feral, unhinged R&B, The Pretty Things turned to flowery pop for Emotions, with producer Steve Rowland commissioning Sunday Night At The Palladium-style brass and strings from them to go on top. Freed from their contract, though, they could leave that behind. When we finished with Fontana, we could do what the fuck we wanted, which was to go in and do demos, Taylor says. The Pretty Things S. Sorrow UK CD album. Sorrow has a significant place in rock & roll history, though it's hardly widely acknowledged. The deluxe version of this seminal & influential album with added BONUS cuts and a bonus DVD of the only live performance from 1999 at Abbey Road Studio by the band of this music Recorded in 1967 at the same time as both the Beatles Sgt Pepper and Pink Floyd's Piper, it also would influence Pete Townshend in the creation of the Who's seminal rock opera, Tommy recorded AFTER SF Sorrow but release prior to it. The Pretty Things' early history in the studio featured the band with its amps seemingly turned up to 11, but for much of S. Sorrow the band is turned down to seven or four, or even two, or not amplified at all except for Wally Allen's bass - natch, and they're doing all kinds of folkish things.
