The Rolling Stones in Mono is a box set by the English rock band the Rolling Stones, released by ABKCO Records in September of 2016. It contains most of the group's British and American studio albums from the 1960s in mono format, on fifteen compact discs or sixteen vinyl records. All tracks were remastered using the Direct Stream Digital process by Bob Ludwig. The original recordings were produced by Andrew Loog Oldham, Jimmy Miller, and the Rolling Stones. If nothing here provides a revelation - none of the mixes are radically different, the way that some Beatles mono sides are - this nevertheless is the best the Rolling Stones have sounded on disc or on vinyl and there's considerable care in this package, from the replications of the sleeves to the extensive notes from David Fricke. Plus, hearing the Stones in mono winds up being a hot wire back toward the '60s: this feels raw and vibrant, as alive as the band was in the '60s. In Mono includes every Stones album from 1964s self-titled debut to 1969s Let It Bleed as well as some of the most epochal 45s of the age, via a nifty 24-track compilation called Stray Cuts: Come On, Satisfaction, Paint It, Black, Jumpin Jack Flash, Honky Tonk Women. Or to put it another way: here is a concise history of rocks second decade, for a measly 120 quid. If 1966 is seen as a landmark year for the Rolling Stones, 1967 is supposedly where they got derailed by psych faddishness. But frankly that does a great disservice to Between The Buttons, and not just because of its classic Gered Mankowitz cover photo of the band in a state of druggy delirium on Primrose Hill. The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London in 1962. The first stable line-up consisted of bandleader Brian Jones guitar, harmonica, and keyboards, Mick Jagger lead vocals, harmonica, Keith Richards guitar, vocals, Bill Wyman bass, Charlie Watts drums, and Ian Stewart piano. Stewart was removed from the official line-up in 1963 but continued to work with the band as a contracted musician until his death in 1985.
