Recorded in 2006 and released in early 2007, the record was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the 07 Grammys. The album was produced by veteran Joe Chiccarelli, with help from producer Phil Ek on three of the songs Australia, Phantom Limb, and Girl Sailor. It was also recorded in Eks home. Mercer had approached Chiccarelli for advice on the new album early in the process, as he had become frustrated by the album coming along less efficiently than h. Wincing the Night Away is the sound of the Shins acknowledging where they've been and moving on to new territory, and while it probably won't change your life, it probably will make it more enjoyable - and, most likely, that's all the Shins wanted to do in the first place. Track Listing. The first song off of The Shins' 2007 album Wincing the Night Away. Instead, Wincing the Night Away feels labored. Gracefully realized though it is, you can hear the three-plus years Mercer spent pondering how to satisfy the expectations his surprise classic had created - and also how to remain fresh and true to himself. No doubt his mad legions will soon be shouting out the gnomic advice of Australia or the unresolved pleas of Girl Sailor the way they now chant the twisty argument for skepticism that is Saint Simon. They've channeled The Smiths and some other early 80's new wave sounds into their quirky modern indie rock spirit to create what is, in my humble opinion, a sheer masterpiece. This album is epic. whoisschmitty23 4. 5 Wincing the Night Away sheds light on The Shins incorporating a new sound into their peppy modus ope. akachanyaki 3 Choked by expectations, The Shins wince from coming of age. calling this the shins best album to date is a crime which should be punishable by death. i found that while being quite a change from earlier material, it is boring and lacks the fun indie pop of the last albums. it also doesnt really have any standout tracks either. except for sea legs. that song is ace. still not a bad cd
