The Smithereens are an American rock band from Carteret, New Jersey, United States. The group formed in 1980 with members Pat DiNizio vocals & guitar, Jim Babjak guitar & vocals, Mike Mesaros bass guitar & vocals, and Dennis Diken drums & percussion. This original lineup continued until 2006, when Mesaros left the band and Severo Jornacion took over on bass guitar until Mesaros' return in 2016. After DiNizio died in 2017, the band continued performing live shows as a trio Babjak, Mesaros and. At first glance, a Smithereens rarities compilation might seem like an odd release. After all, the band was never had more than one gold album and none of their singles cracked the Top 30. That doesn't mean the band didn't have fans, however, nor does it mean that their music was undistinctive, as Attack of the Smithereens proves. Filled with B-sides, demos, rare singles, and live tracks, the collection has a loose charm and freewheeling energy their proper albums occasionally lacked. THE SMITHEREENS-RARITIESATTACK OF THE SMITHEREENS: As a superb sequel to their Blown to Smithereens best of platter, Rarities: Attack of the Smithereens is as much kitschy fun as its B-monster movie title suggests. A heaven sent hodgepodge of demos, flip sides, and cool covers, singer Pat DiNizio and his Jersey boys wear their influences proudly on their sleeves. This album is an occasionally hit or miss compilation of demos, b-sides, and rarities. But one track in particular makes this whole album a must buy.
