Great neglected Dublin 80's 4 piece which featured the writing talents of Steven Ryan and Stan Erraught. Originally compared to American contemporaries like the Long Ryders, despite the fact that they earned the approval of John Peel, they always appeared ill at ease with the record industry. Influenced by the Velvet Underground, Johnny Cash and Big Star they remain one of Ireland's most enduring if least recognised contributions to music. The Stars of Heaven were an Irish guitar pop band formed in Dublin in 1983. They released two albums on the Rough Trade label before splitting up in 1990. The band was formed in 1983 by Stephen Ryan vocals, guitar, Stan Erraught guitar, formerly of The Peridots, Peter O'Sullivan bass guitar, and Bernard Walsh drums. They were strongly influenced by The Byrds and Gram Parsons, even being labelled Ireland's answer to The Byrds, Gram Parsons and the Velvet Underground all in one package. Not that the Stars of Heaven can't rock when they want to. 28 so called because it is twice as fast as Love's 7x7 consists of crashing guitars and a driving bassline, whereas Three Kings Day - in which the protagonist drinks wine as cheap as Hollywood - pulsates with fast guitars and up-tempo drumming. However, it is on the more tender songs that the Stars of Heaven really make their mark. Was there ever a more touching love song than 2 O'Clock Waltz .
