Album
Charlotte, NC group the Tempests cut a good album and a few non-LP singles in the late '60s full of assertive, brassy, good-time soul in the beach music tradition, though they didn't quite break out nationally. They were formed by brothers Roger Branch guitar and Michael Branch keyboards, eventually growing into a ten-piece band that was large even by beach music standards. for the Smash label, also titled Would You Believe. Mostly devoted to strong if nearly unremittingly upbeat original material, it was followed by a couple non-LP singles. The album was reissued on CD with historical liner notes in 2007, adding both of the non-LP 45s as bonus cuts. The Tempests' sole album is prototypical late-'60s beach music: swinging if somewhat bellicose blue-eyed soul, albeit in a ten-piece band with nine whites fronted by a black singer. There's a staunch brassiness to the arrangements, with two saxes and two trumpets, and Hazel Martin delivers his vocals with assured though slightly vibrato-laden earnestness. More beach soul ingredients are added by the keening, buzzing organ of Michael Branch. Listen free to The Tempests Would You Believe Would You Believe, Ain't No Big Thing and more. 11 tracks 26:08. The album features a cover of Simon and Garfunkel's I Am a Rock, which displayed a progression for the band at the time with the rise of folk rock. However, Would You Believe also features covers of Buddy Holly's Take Your Time and Chuck Berry's Sweet Little Sixteen, though R&B and blues covers were becoming passé by 1966. Also included is the Evie Sands cover I Can't Let Go, which became a major hit for the Hollies. 15 tracks 36:59. Would You Believe, 02:10. Happiness, 02:25. I Cried for You, 02:32. Someday, 02:30.
