It entered the US Billboard 200 chart on 20 November 1971, peaking at number 11, and the UK chart on 3 December 1971, peaking at number 9. Part of the reason why it is so successful is that it has an actual purpose. Meaty was designed as a collection of the group's singles, many of which never appeared on albums. Album 1971 14 Songs. Released before Who's Next and its substantial shift in the band's sound, Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy tells the tale of The Who as a singles band. Some songs here also appear on proper studio albums, but they never sound in a better context than when matched up with other singles. Though Pete Townshend longed to write grand epics and successfully brought rock operas to the world, he was also one of the all-time best writers of three-minute pop singles. MEATY BEATY BIG & BOUNCY was the first Who compilation to be released in both the UK and US. With an attractive gatefold sleeve and a specially shot cover photo by Rogers cousin Graham Hughes, it went a long way towards introducing new American fans to The Whos early UK triumphs. In an article which Pete wrote for Rolling Stone, he described MEATY BEATY BIG & BOUNCY as the best ever Who album. Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy was re-issued on 180gram heavyweight vinyl in October 2017. The Whos most famous compilation covers their 1960s output, collecting their most popular singles at the time, along with album tracks Boris the Spider and Im a Boy. This was also the first time that Substitute, The Seeker, and Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere had appeared on any album, while it was the first UK LP release for Magic Bus and Pictures of Lily.
