Album

Thelonious is a 10 LP by American jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk, performed by the Thelonious Monk Trio. It was originally released in 1953 as the first of five 10 LP studio albums by Monk for Prestige PrLP 142, and was later expanded into the 12-inch album Thelonious Monk Trio with the addition of two non-chronological later tracks. Thelonious Monk's final recordings for Riverside before signing with Columbia resulted in this two-LP set, which contains lengthy runthroughs of Monk's standard repertoire by his quartet at concerts in Milan and Paris. While the leaderpianist's solos are excellent and tenor-saxophonist Charlie Rouse is in fine form, the spots for bassist John Ore and drummer Frankie Dunlop sound quite routine Ore simply walks during his solos and unnecessary. All of the material had been previously recorded in more definitive versions but this long out-of-print two-fer is still quite enjoyabl.
