The Alchemy Index Vols. I & II: Fire & Water is the fifth studio album by American rock band Thrice. It consists of the first two volumes of The Alchemy Index, a four-disc concept album that was split between two releases, the first in October 2007 and the second in April 2008. The band originally planned to release four discs at once, each disc with six tracks representing one of the four classical elements: Fire, Water, Earth, and Air. It is a concept album with four parts corresponding to the four classical elements. Like a fine meal with multiple courses, it presents the breadth of what Thrice can do musically and lyrically, from hardcore to ambient, blues to grunge. 1 Fire serves up a heavy hardcore sound, dissonant chords, and aggressive vocals. I personally love all of their work and this album is one of my favorites. I love the ambiance and electronic style of these tracks, from the screaming of fire to the dreamy sounds of water. I personally feel that fire pairs better with earth and water pairs better with wind for listening purposes, but either way there is some amazing music on this album. I feel the same thing happening again. Fire is the blistering assault that should be pretty easier to digest for most Thrice fans. Water is more challenging for me, but it's really getting to me now.
