Seeger's father was Charles Seeger 18861979, an important folklorist and musicologist her mother was Seeger's second wife, Ruth Porter Crawford 19011953, a modernist composer who was the first woman to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship. He recorded his first album Folk Songs of the Southern Appalachian Mountains in 1953, and five years later he became a founder member of the New Lost City Ramblers, in which he was joined by John Cohen and Mike Seeger.
