Album
Pack Up the Plantation: Live is the first official live album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, released in November 1985. It was primarily recorded at the Wiltern Theatre during their 1985 tour but also includes several tracks from previous tours. It was released as a double LP or single cassette and compact disc. A concert film of the Wiltern Theatre performance, also titled Pack Up the Plantation: Live was released on home video in 1986. It included songs that did not make the album, such as. Considering that Southern Accents took so much time and money to complete, finally hitting the stores two and a half years after Long After Dark, it wasn't surprising that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers decided to release a double live album, Pack Up the Plantation: Live, a mere eight months after its release. After all, Southern Accents was criticized from many corners for being too slick, too much in Dave Stewart's corner instead of the Heartbreakers', so it made sense to quickly return the focus to the band, showcasing the group as the rockers they are. The exciting cover of The Byrds' So You Want To Be a Rock n' Roll Star opens up the album, and a few other decent covers are found, including Needles and Pins and the Isely Brothers' Shout. The performances by the Heartbreakers are genuine and crisp, and there's enough sing-along and banter to the audience to identify this as a true classic rock concert recording. Tom Petty released 'Pack Up the Plantation: Live' on Oct. 31, 1985, marking his first-ever official concert recording. Both were from the Heartbreakers' 1981 dates, in the same period that Petty and Nicks sang Stop Draggin' My Heart Around from the Fleetwood Mac singer's solo debut. These archival items featured original bassist Ron Blair, while replacement Howie Epstein appeared on the rest. Listen to Tom Petty's Live 'Breakdown'. The results, though perhaps more historically complete, lacked the continuity and tasty leftovers of the Pack Up the Plantation: Live video. On Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers best albums, Damn the Torpedoes and Hard Promises, they mined rich sources, most often the Byrds and the Rolling Stones, and made those sounds their own. Pettys recent work has been less consistent, but on this live double album he still sounds impassioned and impressive when he lays into his early songs such as I Need to Know or American Girl, both included here or a well-chosen cover the Searchers Needles and Pins and John Sebastians Stories We Could Tell . Pettys salvation when his songs fail him is an undeniably great band. Petty was supported by his band, The Heartbreakers, for the majority of his career. He has occasionally released solo work, as was the case with his 2006 album Highway Companion on which he performed most of the backing instrumentation himself. However, members of The Heartbreakers have played on each of his solo albums and the band has always backed him when touring in support of those albums.
