Various Artists. Blaxploitation, Vol. 2: The Sequel. Since the first volume of Blaxploitation used most of the obvious picks for this kind of compilation, the compilers of this volume are left free to make plenty of fresh choices. As a result, Blaxploitation, Vol. 2: The Sequel boasts plenty of enticing rarities like Let's Clean Up the Ghetto by the Philadelphia All-Stars, a funky message tune voiced by a collection of the stars from the Philadelphia-International label including Lou Rawls and Teddy Pendergrass. Blaxploitation or blacksploitation is an ethnic subgenre of the exploitation film that emerged in the United States during the early 1970s. The films, while popular, suffered backlash for disproportionate numbers of stereotypical film characters showing bad or questionable motives, including most roles as criminals resisting arrest. However, the genre does rank among the first in which black characters and communities are the heroes and subjects of film and television, rather than sidekicks, villains. From Shaft to Superfly, Amar Ediriwira unearths the best blaxploitation soundtracks ever recorded. Dovetailing the civil rights movement, 1970s blaxploitation film was the birth of a new code of black representation. Often formulaic, they featured black heroes thrown into style-heavy contexts from crime thrillers to westerns to science fiction, usually battling against white oppression and marginalisation in one form or another. Its a genre ensnared in controversy but whether you consider it empowering or regressive, its impossible. Blaxploitation: A Piece of the Action - Hell Razah, Ayatollah.
