150 years - the liverpool and manchester railway. The Liverpool and Manchester Railway L&MR was the first inter-city railway in the world. It opened on 15 September 1830 between the Lancashire towns of Liverpool and Manchester in England. It was also the first railway to rely exclusively on locomotives driven by steam power, with no horse-drawn traffic permitted at any time the first to be entirely double track throughout its length the first to have a signalling system the first to be fully timetabled and the first to carry mail. Novelty fell off the rails and had to be put on a low loader behind my dad's train the following 2 days. Here is a massive collection of pictures of the event. This is a list of locomotives that were used or trialled on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway L&MR during its construction, at the Rainhill Trials, and until absorption by the Grand Junction Railway in 1845. The rate of progress led to quite a rapid turnover in the operating roster. Writing in 1835, de Pambour found that of the L&MR's then thirty engines, ten were seen as obsolete and day-to-day work was concentrated on. KAMAL ALI ZEGGWAGH Cars. The Stockton & Darlington line opened in 1825 successfully reduced the cost of transporting coal from 18s. to 8s. a ton. After several years of debate, Parliament gave permission for the Manchester & Liverpool Railway to be built in 1826. George Stephenson was faced with a large number of serious engineering problems. This included crossing the unstable peat bog of Chat Moss, a nine-arched viaduct across the Sankey Valley and a two-mile long rock cutting at Olive Mount. The Liverpool & Manchester railway was 31 miles long and consisted of a double line of rails of the fish-bellied type and laid on stone or timber sleepers. The Liverpool and Manchester Railway Project 1821 - 1831. This book, and its companion volume, Donaghy's Liverpool & Manchester Railway Operations 1831-1845, are essential reading for any serious student of the railway industry, particularly, of of large industries in general. The author deals thoroughly with the political, financial and technical details of conceiving and building an unprecedented enterprise in an era in which modern civil engineering, as a science and art, was still being developed, as well as in an era in which life traveled at the speed of a horse, and a large part of the population were, at best, skeptical o
