The Rough Guide to the Music of India and Pakistan is a world music compilation album originally released in 1996. Part of the World Music Network Rough Guides series, it focuses on the music of India and Pakistan, ranging from Hindi film songs to Hindustani classical music to Qawwali to folk. The release was compiled by Phil Stanton, co-founder of the World Music Network. Artwork was designed by Impetus and Anthony Cassidy. Pakistani music is shown off by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in a devotional piece of qawwal, and Zarsanga gives a nice pashtu performance. On top of this, Rajasthani folk forms are also given some time with the Musicians and Poets of Rajasthan. Both classical and folk forms are represented in fine form on the album. The one regrettable feature is the incessant shortening of the classical pieces to five-minute excerpts. The Rough Guide to the music of India and Pakistan ranks way up there in the higher echelons of the Rough Guide musical canon. It's practically Rough Guide nirvana not the Seattle grunge thanks to the amazingly compiled collection of folk songs, classical ragas and religious Pakistani qawwali that it offers. This recording gives us a stunning reminder that the Indian subcontinent is one of the most culturally rich and ethnically diverse places on earth, with the added attraction of cradling an ancient, highly sophisticated, intensely spiritual and exquisitely beautiful musical traditio.
