Dan Forrer, a Canadian film producer takes his crew to the Bronx, NY., on a mission...to find the roots of what is considered Hip-Hop's national Anthem.
The story of a band that never was, and a chain of events that erupted in the making of an obscured Album.
Narrated by Rock super-star Gene Simmons; it includes multiple interviews with key artists that unknowingly at that time would be part of a new musical revolution. Many great commentaries by some of the most iconic Rap/Hip-Hop figures in the music industry.
Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band - Bongo Rock would become one of the most sampled albums in Hip-Hop's history, 40 years after it was released back in 1973.
Other great facts; the album was actually recorded in a recording studio in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
Michael Viner, who was a music executive with the MGM label, was the mastermind behind the band, who recruiting a bunch of musician from all over, and flew them to Canada, where the recording sessions took place inside the Can-Base Studios.
The instrumental song "Bongo Rock" was not a great success when the single first came out into the American market; instead it performed better in the Canadian market.
By the late 70's, a couple of copies of this album would eventually land on a pair of turntables operated by a young DJ named Kool Herc in the Bronx, NY...and the rest is history. Since then the album has been sampled by an endless list of artists from all over the world.
"Sample This" saw its debut during the Austin Film Festival, in October 2012 (Texas, USA).
The UK screening took place at London’s British Film Institute on June 2013.
Go-Digital acquired the digital rights to release this film via the internet, scheduled for September 13th, 2013. The film can be downloaded via iTunes, available in HD or SD format for a fee.
The film will also be simultaneously playing at selected movie theaters across the USA & Canada, starting September 13th, 2013 for a limited time.

The Incredible Bongo Band, also known as Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band, was a project started in 1972 by Michael Viner, a record artist manager and executive at MGM Records. Viner was called on to supplement the soundtrack to the B-film The Thing With Two Heads. The band's output consisted of upbeat, funky, instrumental music.
