Singles is the original soundtrack album to the film Singles, primarily focused on the ascendant Seattle grunge scene of the early 1990s. It also features contributions from Minneapolis's Paul Westerberg his first solo material after the breakup of The Replacements, Chicago's The Smashing Pumpkins, and past Seattle rockers Jimi Hendrix and The Lovemongers Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, the latter wife of the movie's director Cameron Crowe. Between the lovely, stormy rock of Screaming Trees Nearly Lost You and the snotty self-portraiture of Mudhoneys Overblown, Crowe shows grunges diversity, while cuts from Hendrix and Heart nod to Seattles heritage. Through the Singles soundtrack, Crowe expertly situated grunge within the 60s and 70s classic rock pantheon while, through Westerberg, not testing the rom-com demographic by putting TAD or Screaming Trees on the trailer. Its not a perfect fit: though Westerbergs DNA as the leader of the Replacements winds through grunge, the chipper, raspy power-pop of Dyslexic Heart sits oddly aside Soundgarden and Alice in Chains on the soundtrack.
