The Privy Council of the United Kingdom is a formal body of advisers to the Sovereign of the United Kingdom. Its membership mainly comprises senior politicians who are current or former members of either the House of Commons or the House of Lords. The Privy Council formally advises the sovereign on the exercise of the Royal Prerogative, and corporately as Queen-in-Council it issues executive instruments known as Orders in Council, which among other powers enact Acts of Parliament. The Council also. Who sits on the Privy Council There are about 600 privy counsellors at the moment, including all former prime ministers and cabinet ministers as well as leaders of the opposition. Here is a full list. Other members include Prince Philip and Prince Charles, the current and former Speakers of the House of Commons, Archbishops, senior Bishops, senior courtiers, senior backbenchers and and senior judges. In practice, its regular meetings are only attended by Cabinet or very senior ministers. MPs who are privy counsellors are referred to as right honourable members in the House of Commons. How oft. The Privy Council is the mechanism through which interdepartmental agreement is reached on those items of Government business which, for historical or other reasons, fall to Ministers as Privy Counsellors rather than as Departmental Ministers. Privy councillors include religious leaders, and gatherings are held around once a month. Privy Counsellors are members of the Queen's own Council, the 'Privy Council'. During debates in the Commons, MPs who are Privy Counsellors are referred to by their colleagues asThe Right Honourable Member'. The Lord President: Presides at Privy Council meetings, including any Emergency Privy Councils. The earliest records of the Privy Council date back to the court of the Norman Kings who ruled over England from 1066 to 1154. Although it was originally named the Kings Council, the body developed the description privy, with reference to the words archaic meaning of hidden to highlight its frequent private meetings. At the time of the Councils creation, it was given a number of executive responsibilities and was expected to advise the monarch of the day in carrying out duties and their exercise of the royal prerogative. Privy Council, historically, the British sovereigns private council. Once powerful, the Privy Council has long ceased to be an active body, having lost most of its judicial and political functions since the middle of the 17th century. This atrophy was a result of the decline of the sovereigns. This atrophy was a result of the decline of the sovereigns responsibility for political decisions as power moved from the monarch to the prime minister and the cabinet. Chris Huhne has joined a select club: those who have been a member of the Privy Council, and then voluntarily left. History records just four others who have quit the institution whose members once advised the monarch on how to wield their power. Privy Councillors are usually members for life, and are entitled to adopt the right honourable honorific. Nowadays there is no other obvious benefit to being a member, but the excision of the right honourable prefix has never been trauma-free, and is usually accompanied by scandal, deceit or ignominy. His Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council, usually known simply as the Privy Council, is a formal body of advisers to the Sovereign of the United Kingdom. Its membership mainly comprises senior politicians, who are present or former members of the House of Commons or the House of Lords. The sovereign, when acting on the Council's advice, is known as the King-in-Council or Queen-in-Council. The members of the Council are collectively known as The Lords of His Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council. The Privy Council, like Parliament, was a development of the King's Council. The King's Council, or 'curia regis', was the court of the monarch surrounded by his royal officers and others upon whom he relied for advice. By the later fifteenth century the council had advisory, executive and judicial functions though surviving records are mainly confined to the last. It is at this period that the 'secret' or privy council makes its formal appearance when, in February 1490, Parliament elected 2 bishops, an abbot or prior, 6 barons and 8 royal officers to form the king's council 'for the ostensioun and forthputting of the King's authorite in the administracioun of justice'.
