The Wailing Souls originally The Renegades are a Jamaican reggae vocal group whose origins date back to the 1960s. The group has undergone several line-up changes over the years with Winston Pipe Matthews and Lloyd Bread McDonald the only constant members. They have been nominated for Grammy Awards three times. The group was originally formed as The Renegades in 1966, comprising Winston Pipe Matthews, Lloyd Bread McDonald, and George Buddy Haye, who had attended the same vocal classes held. The Wailing Souls pushed the musical limits of the reggae genre with that release, blending sounds of funk, r&b, and country into their roots tradition, securing their reputations as pioneers in the genre. By 1977, the Wailing Souls were ready to have a go running their own record label, which they named Massive. First comprised of Winston 'Pipe' Matthews on lead vocals, Lloyd 'Bread' McDonald, and George 'Buddy' Haye, the Wailing Souls carried the moniker of the Renegades during the late 1960s. This line-up recorded backing vocals for an Ernest Ranglin album before breaking up in 1968. Pipe' and 'Bread' teamed up with two other singers after that, Oswald Downer and Norman Davis, and they went on to work with Coxsone Dodd's famous Studio One label recording label.
