To My Queen is an album led by vibraphonist and composer Walt Dickerson recorded in 1962 and released on the New Jazz label. Down Beat reviewer Don Nelson wrote This tribute from Dickerson to his wife constitutes some of the finest jazz I have heard this year. It is necessary. To My Queen is Walt Dickerson's crowning achievement, a perfect balance between his intellectually advanced concepts and deeply felt passion. Dickerson had always displayed a fertile imagination, but there hadn't been much indication that his vision could be as expansive as it was on To My Queen. Never before had he attempted such extended, freely structured performances, which makes the album's consistency and focus all the more impressive. Walter Roland Dickersonborn April 16, 1928 or 1931 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - , 2008 was a jazz vibraphone player most associated with post-bop. He graduated from Morgan State University in 1953 and after two years in the Army he settled in California. There he started to gain attention leading a band with Andrew Hill and Andrew Cyrille, but it was his later time in New York City that earned him full notice. To My Queen-Walt Dickerson best and his beautiful tribute to his wife Elizabeth. S Walt was soon to enter the space race and set the controls for the heart of the sun with Sun Ra and then do series of albums on SteepleChase that are a mixed bag with the best probably being Divine Gemini Visions and Peace. The Impressions of A Patch of Blue with Sun Ra on piano is also a essential purchase. Newcomers to Walt should start with To my Queen and his other OJC releases, proceede to A Patch of Blue and if they like that, move on to the SteepleChases. To My Queen Reissue. Jazz 1978.
