Whitesnake recorded two concerts on the 23rd and the 24th June 1980 to make the official live album which was released later as "Live...In The Heart Of The City". This is taken from the original master tapes which were recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon show on 24th June 1980.

The album charted at number 5 on the UK Albums Chart, and number 146 on the Billboard 200. Sides 1 and 2 of the vinyl are from recordings made with the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio at the Hammersmith Odeon, during the band's 1980 World Tour. Whitesnake ended their first incarnation with a double live album towards the tail end of 1980. Live in the Heart of the City' is rock solid representations of the band's oeuvre to date as most if not all of their best songs are featured. When the record was released state side, only the 1980 show was featured and two songs were shorn off. This current import reissue features both Hammersmith Odeon performances from 1978 and 1980. Virtually every hard rock band in the universe managed to release a live usually double album in the late '70s, and Whitesnake were certainly no exception. In the Heart of the City does a pretty good job of collecting the highlights from the band's first four releases, as well as a few Deep Purple standards singer David Coverdale, organist Jon Lord, and drummer Ian Paice are all Purple alumni
