Great Pianists of the 20th Century was a 200-CD box set released by Philips Records in 1999 and sponsored by Steinway & Sons. The box set comprises 100 volumes featuring 72 pianists of the 20th century, each volume with two CDs and a booklet about the life and work of the featured pianist. The set contains a variety of composers from different eras, from Baroque to Contemporary classical. I have owned both the complete late-60s Kempff studio recordings of the Schubert sonatas on DGG, as well as his absolutely exquisite 1975 traversal of various Liszt pieces. The latter in particular have been a treasured item in my collection since the vinyl ages, and many other collectors consider them to be some of the finest Liszt solo piano recordings ever made. The Beethoven is solid probably the last of the sonatas at which Kempff's style really lends itself to the music I think other pianists bring more oomph to sonatas 28-32. The Mozart, pleasant enough, although it doesn't push anyone else off the top of the heap. Disc IDs 0. For a 20th century piano survey, there's hardly any 20th century piano music, although the notes vaunt several of the artists as committed modernists. Nor are many early masters of the century de Greef, Lamond or the great composer-pianists Bartok, Prokofiev included, presumably because they were not sufficiently prolific to fill 2 CDs by themselves, even though they are praised in their students' volumes. Even within individual sets, the notes cruelly tease with unfulfilled expectations, touting several artists' preferred repertoire which is omitted from their volumes thus
