Plot summary of and introduction to William Shakespeares play The Two Gentlemen of Verona, with links to online texts, digital images, and other resources. Valentine leaves their home city of Verona for Milan, but Proteus, in love with Julia, stays behind. Then Proteus's father sends him to Milan, too. Before leaving, Proteus pledges his love to Julia. In Milan, Valentine and the duke's daughter, Sylvia, are in love. Proteus, on arriving, falls in love with Sylvia at first sight. He reveals to the duke that Sylvia and Valentine plan to elope, and Valentine is banished. Meanwhile, Proteus's earlier love, Julia, assumes a male disguise and travels to Milan. The Two Gentlemen of Verona is a comedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1589 and 1593. It is considered by some to be Shakespeare's first play, and is often seen as showing his first tentative steps in laying out some of the themes and motifs with which he would later deal in more detail for example, it is the first of his plays in which a heroine dresses as a boy. The play deals with the themes of friendship and infidelity, the conflict between friendship and love, and. Act Two, Scene 3. an ante-chamber adjoining Imogen's apartments. Act Two, Scene 4 and 5. I directed Two Gentlemen of Verona back in 1998 and I remember feeling that you're dealing with different kinds of love. It's to do with being true to somebody as much as it is to do with something physical. I still believe very powerfully that is what Shakespeare was intending to achieve. Although he would have done it much more effectively later in his life, nevertheless it is very moving and very powerful, not least because of its innocence. It is a play written by a young person about young people and it is very powerful because of that. Public playhouses and professional full-time acting companies reliant on the market for their income were born in Shakespeare's childhood. William Shakespeare, 1564 - 1616 Although there are many myths and mysteries surrounding William Shakespeare, a great deal is actually known about his life. This staggering output is even more impressive when one considers its variety. Except for the English history plays, he never wrote the same kind of play twice. A Street Near Julia's House 3. William Shakespeare's Two Gentleman of Verona is often considered to be one of the first plays he wrote, with an original date of around 1589-1593. It shows the developmental infancy of many themes he would fully explore in later works and is sometimes considered one of his most underdeveloped and weakest plays. Within the play exist many lighthearted conflicts surrounding infidelity and friendship and the follies of those that fall hopelessly in love. Two Gentleman of Verona also is the first example of a Shakespearean heroine cross-dressing as a boy, a common occurrence in many future w
