But that doesn't stop their fourth album, 2012's ominously named The Black Code, from wanting to put you in the ground While the band's previous LP, the interestingly named Noche del Chupacabra, laid down the psychedelics pretty thickly, The Black Code seems bent on simply melting your face off - at least based on first track Lost Highway's devastating, stoner metal energy, which recalls such worthy predecessors as Orange Goblin, Red Giant, and the sadly doomed Unida. Tearing through the speakers like a swamp monster summoned from some dark cosmic morass, Dallas, Texas riffmasters Wo Fat unapologetically blast out a southern fried, blues-infused version of Psychedelic Doom, conjuring up visions of hoodoo shacks, prowling undead, hell hounds at the crossroads, Lovecraftian cultists and ghouls, and worlds beyond where the riff reigns almighty. With their previous efforts, the band had problems trimming the track list to a manageable length, but on The Black Code, each of the five tunes bring something different to the table, summing all of the band's qualities into an impressive 46 minute set. Wo Fat keep the engine running until the very end by constantly shifting gears, adding lots of epic solos, while guitarist Kent Stump's vocals are more spot on than ever.
