XC-NN - 6. 2: began as simply CNN before the threat of legal action from the news channel forced the trio to alter their moniker. It hardly mattered as the act's self-titled 1994 release came and went, making nary a ripple. The lack of attention they received was hardly surprising as XC-NN is a fairly generic collection of angst-driven, alternative guitar rock with a hint of gothic influences. Lead singer Dave Tomlinson has a rather thin voice and he doesn't so much sing as shout the rather inscrutable lyrics. XC-NN isn't a bad record as much as it is just plain uneventful. Released 1993. They were formed by David Tomlinson vocals , Tim Bricheno previously the guitarist in All About Eve and Vision Thing-era The Sisters of Mercy and Neill Lambert drums. They were augmented by the X after threats of litigation from a certain news network becoming XC-NN. They were joined by Nick Witherick on bass in 1994. XC-NN were an intelligent garage band purposefully unsettling, beautifully brash, profoundly contemporary and born to strut. Introduced to them by my girlfriend, who is also an All About Eve fan, from which group Tim Bricheno originally hailed. But don't expect it to be AAE Mk 2 - some very heafty, hard edged, superbly crafted semi-thrash on this album. Brilliant, driving bass, strange but fitting lyrics, all tied together in an excellent production. Great to drive really, REALLY hard to in the middle of the night
