The Piano Concerto No. 5 in E major, Op. 73, by Ludwig van Beethoven, popularly known as the Emperor Concerto, was his last completed piano concerto. It was written between 1809 and 1811 in Vienna, and was dedicated to Archduke Rudolf, Beethoven's patron and pupil. The first performance took place on 13 January 1811 at the Palace of Prince Joseph Lobkowitz in Vienna, with Archduke Rudolf as the soloist, followed by a public concert on 28 November 1811 at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig under conductor. Music, Arts & Culture. 5 - Arthur Rubinstein, Symphony of the Air, Ludwig van Beethoven. The title 'Emperor' seems to have stuck from the earliest performances of Beethovens music, although I doubt its a name hed have given to a concerto which has been described as the embodiment of Romantic conflict. A very real conflict certainly had an impact on Beethovens writing in 1809, but given the way we know Beethoven felt about the Emperor Napoleon, its hardly a title he would have chosen. There are a number of stories about how this, his fifth piano concerto, got its name - and I think the most plausible comes from the circumstances of its Viennese premiere. Beethovens Piano Concerto No. 5 seems inseparable from its nickname, the Emperor. Its invention has been attributed to one Johann Baptist Cramer, a pianist, composer and publisher based in London who was friendly with Beethoven and probably knew the value of good marketing. Beethoven began composing his Emperor Concerto in 1809, while Vienna was under invasion from Napoleons forces for the second time. In 1805 the French had left the city demoralised and its monarchy with only a rump of its former power.
