Album
Empathy is a 1962 album by jazz musicians Bill Evans and Shelly Manne. It was recorded and released by Verve Records, the label Evans joined a year after the recording session. The album came about when Manne and Evans were sharing a bill at New York's Village Vanguard nightclub, and Verve producer Creed Taylor proposed a studio collaboration for the two bandleaders. Riverside Records, Evans' label during 1962, allowed Evans to participate, and the trio was completed by Manne's bass player of the time. Empathy - Bill Evans, Shelly Manne, Monty Budwig. Shelly Manne, Bill Evans. This album came about through a fortuitous convergence of circumstances. Shelly Manne & His Men were appearing at New York's Village Vanguard, sharing the bill with the Bill Evans Trio. Getting Riverside's permission to let the pianist participate, Creed Taylor set up a session at Rudy Van Gelder's studio with Evans and Manne sharing top billing. Manne's bass player, Monty Budwig, made up the trio. This was a busman's holiday for Evans, who was freed from the musical parameters he had set for his then-current trio. In this album he's playing with Shelly Manne and Monty Budwig. Comparing this to other Bill Evans albums, I would say his playing here may be a little inferior than on others but still strong nonetheless. On the upside, Shelly Manne's drumming brings a creative edge to the album that isn't heard in other albums of Evans'. There is even a really cool point at the end of With a Song in My Heart where Evans and Manne play free improvisation. Manne has a way of placing fills that are intense and interesting but still have a laid-back feel to them. Get Manne, Bill Evans With Monty Budwig Let s Go back to the Waltz. Listening to these three , it's clear that everyone was having a good time and simply enjoying being relieved of their duties with their regular combos, even if for just one day. Track listing.
