Release Date. 25 October 1974. An important transition in Marley's discography, Natty Dread was the first album released as Bob Marley & the Wailers as opposed to The Wailers and the first recorded without former bandmates Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. It is also the first album recorded with the I-Threes, a female vocal trio that included Bob's wife, Rita Marley, along with Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt. As part of the Wailers and before the release of Natty Dread, Bob Marley had already put in a considerable effort to break into the charts with his first international album releases Catch A Fire and Burnin. Those albums, both released in 1973, would eventually be recognised as classics, but neither of them reached the Top 100 in either the US or the UK. Natty Dread is Bob Marley's finest album, the ultimate reggae recording of all time. This was Marley's first album without former bandmates Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston, and the first released as Bob Marley & the Wailers. The Wailers' rhythm section of bassist Aston Family Man Barrett and drummer Carlton Carlie Barrett remained in place and even contributed to the songwriting, while Marley added a female vocal trio, the I-Threes which included his wife Rita Marley, and additional instrumentation to flesh out the sound. The material presented here. Bob Marley & The Wailers. Reggae 1974. But don't sleep on the tracks that surround it: Lively Up Yourself is a cool mood-setter that runs on slinky, lilting grooves, and Rebel Music 3 O'Clock Road Block is a freedom cry bolstered by clever use of harmonica. The presence of vocal trio The I Threes helps smooth out any lingering rough edge. Released October 25, 1974. Natty Dread Tracklist. Lively Up Yourself Lyrics. Natty Dread Q&A. Producers Bob Marley & The Wailers, Chris Blackwell & Steve Smith. Writers Aston Family Man Barrett, Bob Marley, Carlton Carlie Barrett & 5 more. Arranger Jean Roussel. Bass Guitar Aston Family Man Barrett. Natty Dread captures Bob Marley's decisive transition from Wailers band member to auteur, his singing and writing now front and center, and the revamped band securely reined in to his defiant, Rastafarian worldview. This 1974 release mirrors the lineup's more sinewy sound, carved by Al Anderson's spidery guitar fills, Touter's telegraphic keyboard, the I-Threes' female vocal choruses and vamping horns-a potent brew that bubbles under his then most openly political songs. It has to be said that it loses a little of the vibe of the first two albums, just slightly
