Ames Piano Quartet, The. DVORAK Piano Quartet in E-flat major, Op. Antonín Dvořák's Piano Quintet No. 2 in A major, Op. 155, is a quintet for piano, 2 violins, viola, and cello. It was composed between August 18 and October 8, 1887, and was premiered in Prague on January 6, 1888. The quintet is acknowledged as one of the masterpieces in the form, along with those of Schumann, Brahms and Shostakovich. The work was actually composed as the result of the composers attempt to revise an earlier work, Piano Quintet in A major, Op. Dvořák was dissatisfied with. The two Antonin Dvorak Piano Quartets are beautiful and interesting. Though underpublicized, I would put them just a notch below the major Johannes Brahms chamber music works in terms of quality. 65 Piano Trio and efforts like the famous A-major Piano Quintet, the 2nd & 4th Dumky Piano Trios, and the two quartets played here are front rank 19th-century chamber works. The first quartet dates from fairly early on in his career, 1875, when he was 34. At a bit over half an hour in length, this to me is my favorite of the two works. However, after listening to this album a number of times, I understand where Fanfare is coming from, and I just may agree. The Piano Quartet no. 1 in D major of 1875 was one of the first works in which the young Dvořák, inspired by Schubert, laid the foundations of the compositional style which he would conserve for the rest of his life. Fourteen years later, he composed the Piano Quartet no. 2 in E flat major , completed under pressure from his publisher. This work, influenced by Brahms, is one of the masterpieces of his maturity. Two further recordings will complete this quadriptych of the Czech composers keyboard trios, quartets and quintets. Related Artists. Busch Trio. Ori and Omri Epstein
