Federal is the debut studio album by American rapper E-40. It was released on November 9, 1993, on Sick Wid It Records. It peaked at number 80 on the Billboard Top R&BHip-Hop Albums. Jive Records reissued Federal in 1995 with an alternate tracklist and tracks 7, 11 and 13 missing. Spin called Federal a historic, self-released debut invented a hustle, a sound, a new rap language. All tracks were produced by Studio Ton. Extra Manish contains a sample of Left Me Lonely by MC Shan. E-40 began as a money-hungry gangsta rapper, as showcased here on Federal, with its respective Mob and Gangsta sides. Studio Ton handles the production duties, and guests, including B-Legit, are few and far between. The music itself is stark and definitely underground, a bit dated as well, characteristic of the early-'90s West Coast gangsta rap movement.
