It was recorded May 1981 in Nashville, and released on 23 October 1981. The record's songs consist entirely of country covers, including works originally written by Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, George Jones and Gram Parsons. It was Costello's first album not to be produced by Nick Lowe. Contemporary critical reaction to Almost Blue was mixed, with Trouser Press labelling the album surprisingly clumsy and a dud, while Robert Christgau. Elvis Costello's country record is usually written off as a vanity project, but Almost Blue is quite a bit more than that. It's one of the most entertaining cover records in rock & roll, simply because of its enthusiasm. The album begins with a roaring version of Hank Williams' Why Don't You Love Me and doesn't stop. Costello covers Parsons' Hot Burrito No. 1 and How Much I Lied, and all of the music on Almost Blue recalls Parsons' taste for hardcore honky tonk and weepy ballads. Track Listing. Almost Blue. Elvis Costello Format: Audio CD. Please retry. Costello's flirtation with real country music, this album of covers produced in Nashville by veteran Billy Sherrill was prompted by some genuinely bad feelings as his personal life fell apart. It hasn't held up well over the years since its 1981 release, but there is one brilliant moment-Costello's cracked-voice reading of hero Gram Parsons's How Much I Lied. It's just Elvis having fun covering some of his favorite country songs no more and no less. This song is by Elvis Costello & The Attractions and appears on the album Imperial Bedroom 1982 and on the live album My Flame Burns Blue 2006 by Elvis Costello. Trumpet player Chet Baker, whose rendition of The Thrill Is Gone was a favorite of Costello's, sometimes performed this song in concert and recorded a version that showed up on many compilations after his death in 1988. Other artists to cover the song include Diana Krall, Alison Moyet, Gwen Stefani and Everything But The Girl. This is an unusual song for Costello in that it begins with the title, as does the song on which it is based, The Thrill Is Gone. More songs from Elvis Costello. More songs about heartache.
