Album
Pictures at an Exhibition is a live album by the English progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released in November 1971 on Island Records. It is a recording of the band's arrangement of Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky, performed live at Newcastle City Hall on 26 March 1971. Keith Emerson wished to arrange the piece after seeing an orchestral performance of it several years before. He bought a copy of the score, and pitched the idea to Greg Lake and Carl Palmer, who agreed to. Pictures At An Exhibition - Emerson, Lake & Palmer. It does some violence to Mussorgsky, but Pictures at an Exhibition is also the most energetic and well-realized live release in Emerson, Lake & Palmer's catalog, and it makes a fairly compelling case for adapting classical pieces in this way. At the time, it introduced classical rock to millions of listeners, including the classical community, most of whose members regarded this record as something akin to an armed assault. Mussorgsky wrote Pictures At An Exhibition as a tribute to his artist friend Hartmann. The music is Mussorgsky's impressions of Hartmann's paintings, interspaced with the evolving Promenade refrain, which represents Mussorgsky walking from painting to painting. It also helps to know this when listening to the ELP version. On the live-album Pictures At An Exhibition '72 ELP stunned the world with a powerful and dynamic sound, loaded with sensational runs on the Hammond organs and modular Moog and great play on the piano in the 'encore' Nutrocker. Greg Lake his voice gives the music a more warm sound and Carl Palmer is a living powerhouse . Art Rock Classical Crossover. Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Pictures at an Exhibition was one of the seminal documents of the progressive rock era, a record that made its way into the collections of millions of high-school kids who never heard of composer Modest Mussorgsky and knew nothing of Russia's Nationalist Five or artistarchitect Victor Hartmann, whose work was the inspiration for Mussorgsky. This is Emerson, Lake & Palmer's adaptation of Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky's 1874 piano suite Pictures At An Exhibition, which was first orchestrated in 1891 10 years after Mussorgsky's death by another Russian composer, Mikhail Tushmalov. The most popular orchestration of the song was done in 1922 by the French composer Maurice Ravel. The ELP arrangement, which is based on Ravel's, is adapted for the 3-piece band. Emerson, Lake & Palmer's self-titled debut album was released in November 1970. They planned to record Pictures At An Exhibition for their next album, but decided instead to make a piece called Tarkus the centerpiece and title track. Pictures At An Exhibition.
