Album

Works Volume 1 is the fifth studio album by English progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released as a double album on 25 March 1977 on Atlantic Records. Following their world tour supporting Brain Salad Surgery 1973, the group took an extended break before they reconvened in 1976 to record a new album. They were now tax exiles and recorded new material in London and overseas in Montreux, Switzerland and Paris, France. Works Volume 1 features a side dedicated for each member to write and. As an ELP album, Works volume 1 sees the band moving away from the formula which had brought them fame and fortune on preceding albums. It was a brave, but probably necessary change which, while serving to give the band members' egos the space they needed, alienated many fans, and in retrospect signalled the beginning of the end. By 1977, they had become so wrapped up in themselves individually that they put out a double album with each member getting a side to his own. Keith Emerson plays a Steinway grand piano along with the London Symphony Orchestra. Greg Lake sings some rather sappy ballads nothing as fun as Lucky Man, unfortunately. And Carl Palmer contributes a selection of drum-heavy fusion pieces
