National culture, software of the mind, unwritten rules about how to be a good member of the group. Exploring Culture brings Geert Hofstede's five dimensions of national culture to life. Gert Jan Hofstede and his co-authors Paul Pedersen and Geert Hofstede introduce synthetic cultures, the ten pure cultural types derived from the extremes of the five dimensions. The result is a playful book of practice that is firmly rooted in theory. Geert Hofstede begins with a general explanation of the masculinity dimension, and discusses how it illuminates broad features of different cultures. Parts Two, Three and Four apply the dimension more specifically to gender and gender identity, sexuality and sexual behaviour, and religion, probably the most influential variable of all. Geert Hofstede added this dimension to his framework, and labeled this dimension long vs. short term orientation. The consequences for work related values and behavior springing from this dimension are rather hard to describe, but some characteristics are described below. Long term orientation: Acceptance of that business results may take time to achieve. The employee wishes a long relationship with the company. Short term orientation: Results and achievements are set, and can be reached within timeframe. The employee will potentially change employer very often. He has become known for pioneering research on national and organisational cultures. Hofstede originally identified four dimensions for defining work-related values associated with national culture: power distance, individualism, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity. A fifth dimension, long term orientation and a sixth dimension, indulgence versus restraint were added later. He devised the Values Survey Module for use in researching cultural differences, and this has been used by many other researchers in their work
